Rhythm

Slow Down and Be Still

The very first principle we teach at all of our experiences is rhythm. It is the idea, once taught to me, that there is a pace at which we need to live our life. This pace is both fast and slow. We absolutely need to get stuff done, to achieve and succeed. After all, King Jesus commands us to work and warns us to not be lazy. But the other side of fast is slow. We also need to retreat and find space to slow it down, rest, refresh our souls, and listen. Jesus modeled this for us several times in the New Testament as He continually got away to seek intimacy with His father.

The pace of moving fast and intentionally slowing down is what we call rhythm.

I’ll be the first to admit that it is tough. It is too easy to just keep going, building, accomplishing… moving. But at the end of the day, if we don’t slow down, the pace of life will kill us both physically and spiritually. We each need to figure out our own rhythm – one that works for our family, and one that keeps us engaged with the Creator – allowing us to listen to His voice. This is how we seek well.

2019 is going to be a challenge for our team and my family. We have so much happening as we build this movement, that it would be incredibly easy to just keep moving all year long. As an example, here are just a few of the things we have lined up…

  • Our current Refresh and Encourage groups will finish experiences 3 and 4 in the first half of 2019 (yes, this is SIX weekend retreats for our team!)
  • We will launch a new spring, summer and fall apparel line as we expand our offering
  • We are putting the finishing touches on the architectural design for the new house at Haven – slated to begin construction in July
  • Legacy Refresh will be heading on a special leadership trip to Estes Park, Co in September

In addition to all of this, we are crafting a new experience to begin in the summer of 2019.  We can’t give you any details at the moment as this is still top secret. Let me just say you are going to love it!

But here is the thing, if we are able to pull all of this off and grow this movement, what does it matter if Jesus is not in it? If Jesus isn’t the one moving us ahead, if He isn’t the one transforming lives and more specifically, if He isn’t doing a restorative work in the lives of our team, then we should quit now because it won’t matter in the end. If He isn’t moving TODAY in our lives, what do we really have to say? What story can we possibly tell?

The challenge in 2019 is that while we’re moving fast, we also move slow. We have to keep our rhythm and seek time with the King to hear his voice. We have to stay on the edge of what Jesus is doing and where He may be moving. And we have to keep seeking his voice, listening intently as we quiet our souls from the noise.

For the next 12 months, I have one goal in my 5 F’s that is specifically designed to help me slow it down. My goal is to spend an entire night away each month doing nothing but listening to the King. The more I get to know him, the more I crave intimacy with him and can’t wait to be alone in his presence for hours at a time. This is how I’m going to slow down this year. This is how I’m going to make sure my family, our team, and this community stays on mission for 2019. I believe that if I follow through on my end, He will show up and speak. When He speaks, it changes everything.

I hope you find your own way to slow it down and keep a rhythm this year.
